With 250 staff and lawyers working across five offices nationwide, Hempsons is a leading law firm for the health and social care, charity and social enterprise sectors.
Our aim is to provide outstanding legal services that deliver the best possible client outcomes whilst nurturing a culture that makes us a “great place to work”.
We have embraced hybrid working, and we operate fully remotely when appropriate.
Our strategy is to grow and diversify our business.
Our commercial litigation team is looking for Solicitor, Senior Solicitor or Associate level candidates to be based from either our Harrogate, Manchester, Newcastle or Southampton offices and are happy to consider those who want Part-time or Flexible Working arrangements coupled with our Hybrid Working environment.
The role will ideally focus on commercial dispute resolution including dealing with public procurement processes and associated challenges and judicial reviews which is an area which has experienced significant growth, although flexibility will be given around the preferences of the candidate.
Candidates with significant non-contentious procurement law experience would also be of interest particularly if open and keen to broaden to embrace contentious procurement and commercial dispute resolution. Other lawyers in the team crossover both contentious and non-contentious aspects of procurement law. The successful candidate will be working with a busy group of contentious and non-contentious lawyers who share this focus.
Our procurement clients include central and local NHS organisations and independent health and care businesses and we act for a broad range of Contracting Authorities and suppliers. Examples of recent and current matters include procurements for national screening services, data analytics, imaging, electronic patient records, hospital management systems, managed pathology services, pharmacy, national PPE requirements, establishing national frameworks and other services.
The successful candidate will join an established and ambitious wider corporate-commercial department of around 20+ lawyers nationally, covering a range of specialisms:
• Contracts (software, manged services, clinical services, collaborations)
• Public procurement
• Governance, public law and statutory powers
• Corporate (start-ups, M&A, reorganisations and corporate finance)
• Digital (IP, technology, data)
• Projects and construction
Our lawyers appreciate the quality and variety pf the projects we work on, and the level of interest and challenge they bring. We work collaboratively and strive to avoid silos, at the same time as encouraging people to play to their strengths.
The candidate can expect to receive outstanding support and mentoring, and will be exposed to interesting and complex work.
Skills and Competencies
Experience of procurement law and/or procurement challenges and/or judicial reviews with a Legal 500 firm or in-house.
An aptitude for engaging with our medical, public and public and voluntary sector clients as well as with commercial businesses. (Prior experience of working within the health and social care sectors is not essential).
A strong teamwork ethos: we work with colleagues across all five offices.
Excellent organisational skills and an appreciation of the need to comply with internal and client data security guidelines
An appreciation of the value our clients bring to society and our role in helping to achieve those goals.
