Russell-Cooke is an expanding and energetic firm of solicitors with offices in Central London, Putney and Kingston. The firm has over 260 fee earners and support staff working across a range of specialist departments. 

The Risk and Compliance department develops and maintains the Firm’s Risk Management policies and procedures and ensures that they are implemented and adhered to across the firm. They also provide guidance, updates, general advice and where necessary training on regulatory and compliance issues.

The Head of Risk and Compliance is seeking a professional support lawyer to mainly assist with issues of negligence and claims and complaints that are made against the firm. The successful candidate will be bright, energetic and enthusiastic. The role requires a team player who is organised, has the ability to work under pressure yet has good attention to detail. A professional approach along with excellent communication skills and discretion will be necessary since the role will involve dealings with employees, partners, solicitors and external agencies. Excellent IT skills and previous relevant administrative work experience and understanding of risk and compliance processes are essential.

The role is subject to a three month probation period, after which the role will be made permanent.

The role is for the equivalent of four to five days a week to work as a professional support lawyer in the risk and compliance team, assisting mainly with complaints and issues of negligence, and from time to time performing general risk and compliance tasks. This will involve

Assisting the Head of Risk and Compliance and the Professional Negligence Partner with:

  • Notification of claims:

  • Providing assistance and support to those who notify of a relevant event including advice and assistance with client management.

  • Determining if there is a reportable incident

  • Reporting to and liaising with the firm’s professional indemnity insurer where necessary  

  • Acting as point of contact to manage relationship with panel solicitors when instructed

Analysing trends and providing feedback based on this for example practice notes.

Ensuring there is in place a process for recording notifications/claims and keeping those records about all notifications.

Reporting as follows:

  • Assisting in relation to PII renewal process

  • Providing updated information on notifications/claims for Lender Exchange / Conveyancing lenders panel

  • Preparing the internal annual PII and negligence report to the board

  • Reviewing and updating all notifications in preparation for six monthly meeting with insurers

  • Providing information to the Finance Team for the auditor’s report annually

  • Closing down dormant notifications

     

Assisting the risk and compliance team in relation to dealing with complaints from clients. 

Carrying out ad hoc general risk and compliance tasks which may include by way of example:

  • Assisting in monitoring compliance of the firm’s AML procedures for all new clients

  • Where required conducting searches carrying out electronic AML checks

  • Maintaining and updating various central risk registers, complaints, confidentiality breaches, conflicts, undertakings, compliance with Legal Ombudsman’ awards

  • Responding to queries from the firm.

  • Carrying out file reviews

  • Liaising with other members of Business Support Group in relation to queries/ projects.

  • Assisting in carrying out conflicts searches and providing general risk and compliance advice
