An opportunity has arisen for a future trainee starting as a paralegal in a leading maritime law firm based in the City of London. The firm is looking to strengthen our team, particularly with a view to increasing our profile in the Chinese market.

Working as part of a small team you will be involved in a broad range of matters and the right candidate will be given the opportunity of a training contract, subject to performance. 

Duties will include:

  • Drafting formal legal documents, such as contracts and pleadings, as well as correspondence with clients and other parties; 
  • ·         Undertaking legal business on behalf of clients in areas of maritime law; 
  • ·          Instructing counsel in higher and lower courts and pleading cases in lower courts and arbitrations as appropriate; 
  • ·          Attending and representing clients in court (with supervision);
  • Undertaking research on applicable regulations, laws and any other legal regulatory framework;
  • Discovering facts of case - scrutinising statements, reports and legal documents relevant to the case being undertaken and preparing papers for court;
  • Collecting and organising evidence and other important papers for supervisor to review;
  • Keeping client files organised and up to date in paper and/or electronic format;
  • Preparing reports in anticipation of court or tribunal attendance;
  • Gathering formal statements from parties and witnesses for use in court;
  • Assisting during trial by taking notes, preparing exhibits, and reading court transcripts;
  • File documents, such as briefs and appeals, with court and other parties;
  • Arrange meetings and statements with clients, witnesses, and other legal professionals or experts;
  • Contact clients to investigate the legal matter and keep them apprised of the status; and
  • Attend to basic clerical tasks, such as photocopying, making and receiving phone calls, and fielding correspondence. 

Skills and Education Requirements

  • ·      Law degree and/or equivalent conversion course
  • ·      Masters degree in shipping law preferable
  • ·      Legal Practice Course or equivalent
  • ·      Fluent verbal and written English
  • ·      Fluent verbal and written Chinese
  • ·      Demonstrated interest in shipping law
  • ·      Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • ·      Comfortable handling large workloads under time constraints
  • ·      Sound knowledge of law and the English Legal System
  • ·      Strong organisational skills
  • ·      Familiar with electronic document management and filing systems
  • ·      Superior research skills
  • ·      Strong interpersonal skills
  • ·      High level of discretion with confidential matters
  • ·      Detail-oriented, computer skills
  • ·      Ability to prioritise workload
  • ·      Works well with different personality types

Hours of work: 09:00 to 18:00 – Monday to Friday

Salary Range: £28,000 to £37,000 depending on qualifications and experience
