The department

Ranked 'Top Tier' Legal 500 2020, the Contentious Trusts and Probate team sits within our wider leading Commercial Litigation department. The dedicated team are experts in advising clients in all manner of sensitive matters including:

* claims for provision from an estate pursuant to the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975

* challenges to the validity of a Will

* problems arising out of the interpretation of a Will/trust document

* disputes between executors/personal representatives/trustees and beneficiaries

* problematic estate administrations

* removal of executors or trustees

* recovering debts, either from or on behalf of estates

* disputes arising from the creation or exercise of enduring or lasting powers of attorney

* disputes in connection with the conduct of a deputy

Purpose of job

The role will be to work alongside and to provide professional, proactive, high level administration and legal support to an allocated group of fee earners and to the wider fee earning team.

Depending on experience, once established, the role will require the candidate to assist with file management and provide first class client care alongside the fee-earners or in their absence.

Accountabilities

* Preparing applications for access to medical records

* Reviewing and providing preliminary reporting on medical records

* Entering and maintaining caveats

* Dealing with initial telephone and email enquiries from clients and referrers to include gathering relevant information and identifying potential issues

* Preparing bundles for conferences with Counsel and court hearings using pdf docs

* Assisting with the drafting of witness statements

* Preparing documents for disclosure including relevant disclosure statements

* Monitoring and providing clients with accurate information and estimates of costs during the course of their matter

Qualifications/Experience

* Prior experience of managing a contentious probate and trusts caseload

* Experience in dealing with high net worth clients and elderly clients.

* Working towards or interest in ACTAPS membership

* Microsoft Office including Word and Excel is essential

* Excellent communication skills

* Ability to organise and prioritise workload within the required timescales

* Ability to work effectively within a team as well as independently.

* Ability to work under pressure as and when required (this may involve some flexibility in working hours)

Skills

* Excellent computer/technical skills in particular working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of software including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint

* Excellent spelling and punctuation

* Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority and liaise effectively with other internal departments and external contacts

* Ability to use discretion

* Positive and enthusiastic approach to team work

* Good telephone manner

* A flexible, highly motivated, proactive and ‘can do’ working style

* Self-motivated, ability to use initiative and provide pro-active support the construction team

* Ability to pay attention to detail and check own work

* Good organisational skills, able to prioritise, make decisions and work effectively within a sometimes pressurised environment

* Commitment to ongoing learning and development
