Departmental Knowledge Development Lawyer – Real Estate Finance (primary focus)/Banking/General Finance

Team: Knowledge Management
Reports to: Finance Departmental KDL, Know How Partner(s) for Real Estate Finance and Banking, Dotted line into the Chief Knowledge Officer

Purpose of job:

• To use your technical legal excellence to produce high quality knowledge content for use internally and externally, and act as a sounding board for partners on legal issues.
• Identify areas for continuous process improvement around the delivery of work product based on a deep legal knowledge and awareness of best practice.

Key responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain a knowledge infrastructure for REF and Banking and identify new ways of sharing expertise with others.
• Work with REF and Banking to communicate and, where appropriate, project manage the implementation of new and ongoing KM initiatives.
• Work with the Firm’s legal knowledge engineers to automate appropriate template documents.
• Oversee and help design technical internal REF and Banking training programmes for UK lawyers and, where appropriate, deliver training to lawyers.
• Assist the Finance Departmental KDL with coordinating knowledge sharing and training across the global department as needed.
• Oversee and help maintain and enhance UK departmental knowledge tools including intranet content and clause banks.
• Assist with client-facing training activities, including delivering training where appropriate.
• Assist with raising the external profile of the department, including drafting briefing papers, thought leadership pieces and client training.
• Deal with ad hoc technical queries from lawyers.
• Be the custodian of the Firm’s finance legal opinion templates and advisor to the Legal Opinions committee.
• Work with other KDLs across the Firm to ensure the coordination of joint initiatives and sharing of best practice.
• Work with partners and business management colleagues to help develop more sophisticated approaches to matter planning, management and pricing.
• Participate in active peer networking.
• Collaborate closely with BD and marketing colleagues to develop high-impact legal content for pitch and marketing materials, and help translate legal developments into opportunities for new revenue generation.
• Develop innovative ways of using knowledge to enhance the Firm’s brand, develop existing and potential client relationships and identify new business generation opportunities, based on a deep understanding of the market and the Firm’s key clients.

Experience and knowledge

• Experience as a REF or general Real Estate or Finance KDL/PSL, with a track record of developing ideas for better leverage of collective wisdom at a strategic level, or as a senior fee-earner in REF/Real Estate/Finance looking for a new challenge. In both cases, good conceptual understanding of what the role is and needs to be today is essential.
• Experience of delivering training (internal and client facing).
• Experience of managing projects in some capacity.

Skills and competencies

• Commercial acumen, able to think “big-picture” and willingness to understand both client and partner need at any time, and flex the KDL offering as needed.
• Have the gravitas to win the respect of partners and be able to establish a rapport with all of the team members.
• Have proven project management skills.
• Be a strong communicator with excellent inter-personal skills (particularly for internal and external training).
• A can-do attitude, with a driven, enthusiastic and energetic approach, willing to roll sleeves up to learn new skills and set an example to others.
