The employment team of Lewis Silkin is one of the leading employment law practices both domestically and internationally. Our team is amongst the largest in the UK with 23 employment / immigration partners and around 100 other specialist lawyers.
The team’s work comprises a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters for a diverse range of clients. Our lawyers undertake a significant amount of business development, including giving seminars, producing Lewis Silkin branded publications and driving client relationships. International advice is central to our practice and we are members of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers. Incentives and Immigration work is handled by specialists within the division and this will therefore not form part of the role.
The Associate will be based in our Cardiff Office (although travel to London and Oxford will be expected from time to time) and will be reporting to Lucy Lewis, Head of the Cardiff office. The Cardiff EIR team consists of two partners, one PDL, one managing associate, two senior associates, four associates, two paralegals and two secretaries.
The Associate’s workload will be exclusively employment work. The Associate will mainly be assisting more senior Associates and Partners with their cases, as well as running his or her own matters under supervision. The caseload will consist of a mix of contentious and non-contentious employment work and will have direct contact with a variety of clients.
The role will develop in accordance with the Associate’s own skills, aptitude and preferences and according to the needs of clients and the department.
We have developed a training programme specifically for our newly qualified lawyers.
The Division’s training programme includes seminars and workshops given by external speakers and by our own internal experts. We have dedicated Practice Development Lawyers who are responsible for maintaining know-how and precedents across the team.
The successful candidates will be allocated a Career Development Partner (CDP) who will have an overview of their long term career aspirations and progression. We have an excellent track-record of developing our Associates and generating opportunities for Partnership. Organic growth and a strong team culture is at the heart of our success.
The candidate will have had at least four months experience in employment law by the time he or she qualifies and will have shown enthusiasm and aptitude for this area of law. The ideal candidate must have excellent academics and have gained the benefit of training in a well-respected Firm. We are looking for someone with good communication and organisational skills. The candidate must have an excellent academic record, strong analytical ability, a clear communication style (both spoken and written), excellent client handling skills and, above all, must be a team player.
