DLA Piper's UK Construction & Engineering team comprises over 40 lawyers, and is recognised as a 2nd tier practice by Chambers & Partners. The team is evenly split between non-contentious lawyers (sitting within the Real Estate Group) and contentious lawyers (sitting within the Litigation & Regulatory Group) and functions on a "one team" basis across DLA Piper's offices in the UK. The UK team in turn forms part of DLA Piper's global Construction practice, which includes over 200 lawyers advising clients in every major jurisdiction around the world.

We are now looking to recruit a junior to mid-level Associate (2-4 PQE) to work within DLA Piper's non-contentious Construction & Engineering team, based in London.


The team predominantly advises "purchaser" clients on domestic and international construction projects, focusing on two core work types: property development and EPC projects.

On the development side, the team is currently advising on a number of high profile schemes, including Wembley Park and the Camden Market projects, as well as developer clients undertaking hotel, student accommodation, retail, PRS and City of London office projects. We also advise numerous corporate occupiers on their construction and capex projects, in the UK and abroad, including Unilever, Merlin Entertainments, WeWork, National Grid, Liverpool Football Club, UPS, Sytner, Montcalm Hotels, Access Self Storage and British Airways.

Our team undertakes the full range of EPC work, working closely with our Projects group, predominantly advising on deals in the Energy, Infrastructure, Transport and Mining sectors. Recent projects include the Hibernia Networks trans-Atlantic high speed internet cabling project, an interconnector project on mainland Europe and a biomass plant in the UK.

The proposed recruit would work as part of the UK team, based in the London office, with the opportunity to work on both development and EPC projects, although candidates wanting to specialise on one particular work type are also welcome.


Lawyers with between 2 to 4 years PQE, are likely to have the right level of knowledge and have gained the right level of experience needed to be able to undertake this role.

In addition you will:

* have strong experience, gained in a leading firm, of drafting and negotiating building contracts, appointments and all other construction documentation

* ideally have experience of advising clients on the JCT, as well as FIDIC and NEC, suite of contracts

* be able to demonstrate an understanding of the commercial issues that are key to our clients

* be commercially astute and stay current on key legal and business news

* have excellent skills in communication, client relations, and team-working

* be able to work flexibly to tight deadlines within our fast moving environment

* have an interest in marketing and business development and a desire to help drive the practice forward

* be able to supervise and mentor more junior members of the team, including trainees and newly qualified lawyers
