The firm

Lewis Silkin is a UK top-100 commercial law firm with offices in London, Oxford, Cardiff, Dublin and Hong Kong. The firm is recognised by clients and industries alike as being distinct: for its deep understanding, insight and advice to creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses; for its market-leading international practice in employment, immigration and reward; and for delivering pragmatic, commercial advice in a refreshingly human way.

With 59 partners and more than 300 staff, the firm is structured around two key divisions.

In employment, immigration and reward, it is consistently top-ranked, and was named HR Law Firm of the Year 2015 by the Legal 500. With over 100 lawyers, Lewis Silkin’s employment and immigration team offers an unrivalled service supporting clients, including many of the world’s leading businesses, on their HR, employment and immigration law needs domestically and internationally.

The creators, makers and innovators team is made up of leading advisers for creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses, offering a deep understanding of the industry sectors in which clients operate combined with real expertise across a wide range of legal services. From start-ups to multinationals, the firm’s comprehensive and commercially focused advice helps clients succeed in an increasingly complex and converged international marketplace.

The department

Lewis Silkin’s Real Estate & Development Department is a busy, successful and well regarded real estate group. It consists of one Consultant Partner, six Partners, one Consultant, one Legal Director, two Managing Associates, seven Senior Associates, one Trainee and two Paralegals. The Cardiff Real Estate team currently consists of a partner, two senior associates and a trainee.

The team is embarking on an exciting expansion plan to provide quality, cost effective legal advice from Cardiff, to service both our existing clients and also assist new clients in the Wales / South West market. The development of our real estate practice into this market will also enhance our established London practice.

Our work includes:-

*

acting for a wide range of developer (both public and private) and contractor clients – commercial, residential and mixed use;

*

acting for our many occupier clients (including global, industrial, medical and advertising groups, restaurateurs and fashion houses) who have significant real estate assets but where real estate isn’t necessarily core business;

*

acting for financiers;

*

acting for property investors on the acquisition, management and disposal of investment properties; and

*

working closely with colleagues in property litigation and supporting colleagues in our corporate department.

Our work is varied, interesting and challenging. We are looking to strengthen our team by recruiting a junior solicitor to join us in Cardiff to support colleagues in all areas of our practice.

All associates ultimately report to the Head of Real Estate & Development in London but the successful candidate will sit with and report to the Head of Cardiff Real Estate on a day-to-day basis.

Responsibilities

The junior associate will have a solid grounding in general real estate matters and will be comfortable and confident working under supervision handling:

*

acquisitions and disposals of leasehold and freehold properties;

*

landlord and tenant;

*

asset management – licences, wayleave agreements etc;

*

property aspects of corporate acquisition and disposals;

*

preparation of reports on title and certificates of title; and

*

carrying out due diligence in the satisfaction of bank’s requirements in connection with charging properties.

There will also be opportunity to assist or become involved in:

*

advising landlords or tenants in relation to complex pre-lets with significant landlord and tenant works;

*

portfolio sales and purchases;

*

acting for overseas investors on the acquisition of investment property;

*

advising occupiers in relation to major development and refurbishment of property; and

*

providing support to colleagues who are involved in the development of significant mixed use regeneration schemes by handling the commercial lease aspects of such developments including drafting service charge regimes for a mixed use large estate.

Candidate profile

We are looking for an associate with between 0 and 1 year’s post qualification experience. The ideal candidate must have excellent academics and have gained the benefit of training in a well-respected Firm.

In addition to being able to demonstrate a sound technical ability, we are also looking to recruit someone with excellent business development skills. As we are a small team, looking to expand, everyone in the team is expected to play a role in that expansion; therefore business development will be a crucial component of this role.

The successful candidate will be able to deal directly with demanding clients, who require a swift, pro-active and commercial approach to their work.

The successful individual will be part of a close-knit, friendly and supportive team; therefore, the ideal candidate will be a strong team player. We work in teams, with the size and composition of the team depending upon the nature of the work. We give early responsibility and encourage our more junior associates to run their own files (with appropriate supervision).

We are looking for someone with good communication and organisational skills who is happy to work within a small new developing team. They must have the ability to build strong working relationships quickly as well as demonstrating a proactive ‘can-do’ attitude and a willingness to assist the team wherever needed.

IT skills required:

* Competency in MS Office suite.

Educational and professional qualifications required:

* Qualified UK lawyer with a current UK practising certificate.

No agencies please.
