The firm

Birketts is a full service, top 100 UK law firm, operating in Cambridge, Chelmsford, Ipswich, Norwich and the surrounding areas.

With a rich heritage spanning over 150 years we’ve built an enviable track record advising businesses, institutions and individuals in the UK and internationally.

Throughout our history our ethos has remained simple: we provide clear legal advice and value and insight to our clients.

We set out to truly understand our clients’ needs and help realise their ambitions.

We believe that through this approach and a combination of technical excellence and high quality service we can develop long-lasting partnerships and become our clients' solicitor of choice.

The department

Our vibrant, energetic Employment Team of lawyers boasts some of the best lawyers in the region specialising in all aspects of employment law facing a company's board or the HR professional - from everyday operational challenges through to advising on strategic issues. The team currently comprises over 20 specialist qualified employment law solicitors, including seven partners (one of whom is an experienced part-time Employment Judge), making us one of the largest employment teams in the East of England. We have the strength and depth of expertise to ensure we deliver the service you expect in respect of technical quality, practical approach and timeliness of advice.

We are proud to act for sector leading clients nationwide and some of the East of England’s most important businesses and institutions.

Purpose of job

This is a great opportunity to join a growing practice area with an excellent reputation, offering good career prospects for the right candidate. You will be joining a relatively new practice area within the firm, which is highly regarded, very busy and rapidly expanding.

You will primarily provide support to and work closely with the head of the team in our Ipswich office advising clients, liaising with HMRC and drafting the necessary documentation but you will also provide support to our Corporate team on transactions involving employee share ownership. Full participation in business development will also be expected, including public speaking, and you will occasionally be required to travel to other locations and offices.

Accountabilities

* Ensure you are aware of and comply with all information security policies of the organisation relevant to your business role;

* Report any actual or potential security breaches; and

* Contribute to risk assessment where required.

* All employees have the authority to act to prevent an information security incident from occurring or escalating, where possible.

The candidate

We are ideally seeking a solicitor of NQ - 6 years’ experience gained within a well-regarded city, regional or national firm, with a good understanding of company law and a well-developed or progressing knowledge of employment tax law (i.e. a good understanding of company law, income tax and capital gains tax application to employee incentives) and/or trust law (including drafting trust deeds, advising on powers and trustee duties).

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, ambitious, energetic, and must have a genuine interest in the incentivisation of employees. The successful candidate will join a rapidly growing practice, and will need to be confident in advising clients directly, as they will be expected to lead on their own matters (with appropriate support and supervision) in addition to providing support on more complex matters led by senior fee earners. They will also be involved in a range of business development activities, including attending networking and other business development events, supporting on tenders/pitches, and writing sector-relevant articles for our own and external publications.

Qualifications/Experience

Strong technical drafting, research and communication skills, with good attention to detail and a commercial/pragmatic approach are essential qualities, as is the ability to deliver a strongly client-focussed service, giving clear, timely and practical legal advice on often complex, technical areas of law.

Prior experience of employee incentives is not essential, but candidates must be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in becoming an employee incentives specialist. Candidates with good quality experience of either corporate, employment or private client work (in particular, trust law) who have a desire to specialise in employee incentives would be suitable for the role. Work includes advising clients on the implications of both direct and indirect employee share ownership, the various models (HMRC approved and unapproved) for achieving employee share ownership via employee trusts, options or other arrangements, drafting the necessary legal documentation and employee friendly communications, preparing corporate ancillary documents, liaising with HMRC and research on a range of related technical questions.

Skills

Experience in Employee Incentives would be helpful, but is not essential, as the successful candidate will be working closely with a highly experienced and senior specialist in the team, who will be responsible for the candidate’s training and supervision.

Equal opportunities

We are committed to recruiting individuals on merits of suitability for each role, on the basis of qualifications and experience. All applications are treated fairly and equally regardless of sexual orientation, race, disability, religious beliefs and any other protected characteristic, ensuring that there are equal opportunities at all stages of the recruitment process.
