Main responsibilities

The Accounts Supervisor reports to the Financial Controller and supports both the FC and FD in maintaining financial and management accounting activities and key compliance responsibilities.  The Accounts Supervisor has management responsibility for a small accounts team.

Accounting and Cashiering

  • Maintain oversight of all day-day accounting by accounts assistants for purchase ledger, counsel and experts, cash receipts and payments, across office and client accounts.
  • Manage distribution of work within the team, provide assistance and guidance and personally cover work of the team as required.
  • Optimise and develop use of Aderant financial system for core financial processes. The Aderant practice management system was introduced in late 2020.The successful candidate will be responsible for optimising the use of the current system and assessing, testing and implementing additional areas of software and modular updates.
  • Actively manage working capital lock-up including reviews with fee earners and assist the Financial Controller with monthly management reporting. Play a key role in unlocking working capital value in line with business budget and cash flow targets.
  • Maintain the LLP’s books of account and assist FC with management and financial reporting. This may include specific areas of responsibility such as; preparing prepayments and accruals schedules, maintaining the fixed assets register, balance sheet reviews, preparation of cash flow statement.

    Compliance

  • Ensure day-to-day compliance with SRA Accounts Rules and report to the COFA on a regular basis.This will include; carrying out regular review of client account balances, timely completion of daily and monthly bank reconciliations, updating the breaches register and addressing any control issues.
  • Lead on the annual Accounts Rules audit with Reporting Accountant.
  • Maintain financial policies and procedures and monitor compliance with them both within in the team and with fee earners.
  • Assist the Financial Controller with year-end financial audit of the LLP, internal audits and other audits in accordance with ISO standards.

    Team

  • Manage a team of three, legal accounts assistants.
  • Carry out employee reviews in line with current firm policies.
  • Ensure training and support for team to maintain resilience in providing services.

    Experience, skills and qualifications:

  • Good understanding of basic accounting fundamentals.Full or part-qualified CIMA or equivalent.
  • Experience of managing teams.
  • Knowledge of Aderant practice management system.
  • Practical understanding of the SRA Accounts Rules.
  • Willingness to champion and implement process improvements.
  • Ability to run Payroll on Sage.
