About the Team

The firm's procurement lawyers are much in demand from universities, academies, central government, local government and private sector clients. The firm requires an excellent lawyer to further strengthen the team.


Overall Objective

To work with colleagues to help clients succeed in realising their objectives, through the efficient delivery of appropriate legal advice and assistance.

Required Skills

The ability to:

* advocate and present orally when required

* conduct effective case and transaction management

* develop strong client relationships

* communicate concisely both verbally and in writing with colleagues and clients

* draft legal documents, advice notes and give legal advice that is clear and concise

* interview and advise clients, helping them decide the best course of action

* identify the relevant legal issues applicable to a case or a transaction

* conduct negotiations where appropriate

* researching relevant areas of law


Key Tasks

A Senior Associate will carry out all the requirements of the Solicitor and Associate job descriptions and in addition the following tasks:

* Legal/technical ability

* Evidence of strong Project Management skills

* Demonstrates a consistently high level of competence/expertise inown area of law

* Operates free from supervision and has responsibility for supervising others and has a track record of doing so effectively

* Is accurate in his/her advice and applies the law in a commercial context for the client and maintains effective working relationships with clients

* Shares client knowledge and supports opportunities to facilitate introductions

* Evidence that they understand the client's business and adjusts their approach accordingly

Business Generation

* Contributes to appropriate business development activities of the team and the Firm

* Wherever the opportunity arises, promotes the services of teams from across the Firm to the client for whom they are acting

* Introduces new clients to the Firm

* Achieves agreed business development targets

* Identifies and attends appropriate networking opportunities

* Actively maintains and manages contact records in SLX

* Shares client knowledge and supports opportunities to facilitate introductions

* Promotes the Firm's sector and team based services, looking to cross refer clients within the Firm

* Is visibly identified within relevant department / sector or BD & Marketing plans

* Takes a lead role in client pitches

Collaboration/People Processes

* Plans, allocates and directs work

* Promotes effective people management within the team

* Manages a small team and conducts annual PDRs, where appropriate

* Provides support to new fee earners in the department to ensure a smooth induction lays an active role within the team and supports other team members during busy times

Financial Management (under the supervision of a Partner)

* Achieves financial and hours targets asset by the HoD

* Evidence of taking responsibility of billing client directly, promptly and regularlywithout supervision, where appropriate

* Accurate scoping of all jobs, using the scoping spreadsheet where necessary and supervising the scoping exercise with juniors

* Working alongside the team or department's pricing champion to develop a departmental approach to pricing.

* Evidence of effectively delegating work to juniors in the team and ensuring that the work is carried out profitably

* Ensures they are the right person/level for the job

* Provides full and prompt assistance to credit control staff to ensure payment of outstanding bills

* Demonstrates an understanding of cash flow and profitability of both the department and the firm

* Maintains WIP at an appropriate level

* Fully conversant with the SRAAccounts Rules

Knowledge Sharing

* Actively encourages and endorses knowledge sharing at team, department and Firm level

* Identifies areas where knowledge sharing principles and practices can be applied to bring about smarter working (improving efficiency and profitability)

* Cascades knowledge sharing practices across work streams and matters, especially on matter analysis, scoping and pricing

* Develops knowledge sharing initiatives for new or highly technical work types e.g. work flows, matter management techniques, know-how, precedents

* Leads on matter specific knowledge sharing within the team via: team meetings, problem solving, training sessions, matter de-briefs, lessons learned/after action reviews

Quality Standards

Demonstrates consistent compliance with the Firm's quality policies and procedures as set out on the intranet

Learning and Development

* Complies with CPD requirements and identifies specific training needs

* Attends appropriate departmental training sessions

* Attends appropriate internal courses (e.g. management and IT skills)

* Provides informal and formal training as appropriate (e.g. induction, mentoring and internal team presentations)
