Job Description

My client is a major UK law firm renowned for the positive and practical way they work. Their no-nonsense approach and wide-ranging expertise help clients achieve their objectives across many sectors, both public and private.

Their commitment to clarity is revealed in their understanding of client objectives, their capacity to shed light on complex legal issues and the straightforward, unequivocal nature of their advice. Their culture is open; their people practical and engaging.

About Their Projects Group

The team has 10 Partners and 15 Associates and draws together specialists in PFI, energy, construction, planning and public sector work. The Projects group is a fast growing, dynamic and integrated team and is committed to the following areas: projects including education (BSF in particular), social housing, leisure, emergency services, health, energy and waste.

Waste Infrastructure Team

Their Waste Infrastructure team sits within their Projects Group and comprises 1 Partner and 3 Associates.  It is also a fundamental part of their cross-departmental Waste Group made up of 6 Partners and over 20 Associates from across the firm including their highly respected Environment and Minerals team based in their national office.

The team is primarily involved in the procurement of waste treatment infrastructure as an alternative to landfill.  They advise sponsors, waste disposal authorities, technology providers, contractors and funders on waste treatment projects primarily in the UK.

A significant part of the work of the team is working on projects procured under the Private Finance Initiative and the team is currently working on 10 active waste projects under the Governments £2 billion waste infrastructure PFI Programme.

They advise both the private and public sector with an impressive client list.

The team works closely with the firm's Sustainable Energy which provides high quality legal advice in relation to energy and climate change related regulatory and policy matters ranging from emissions trading, under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and Kyoto Protocol's project mechanisms and UK specific policies such as the Climate Change Levy and the new Carbon Reduction.

About the Role

You will be working closely with Partners and Associates within the team and wider Projects Group as well as with our transactional associates from across the firm, including environment, planning, construction, corporate, property and litigation.

You will be involved in:

Some of the largest and most interesting waste infrastructure projects in the country.

High quality legal advice on projects for clients from both the public and private with a total deal value of over £5 billion.

Helping to create novel, sustainable solutions, integrating energy and waste.

You will be involved in industry sectors undergoing rapid change.  As climate change and sustainability become key drivers shaping new legislation and reshaping existing regimes, this is affecting the make-up of the industry and creating new business opportunities.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the team, including marketing and business development activities as well as participating in training programmes and market updates.

This team is rapidly growing and so this is an exciting opportunity to be part of its development.  For the right candidate, the career progression prospects are excellent.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

They are looking for an Associate with at least 4 years PQE and some relevant experience of waste infrastructure projects in the UK preferable with some recent experience of projects procured under PFI. This could have been gained in a leading UK law firm or whilst working in industry, for example, for a waste contractor, a waste disposal authority or a utility.

You should be able to combine your existing experience with a commercial and innovative approach to delivering sustainable solutions.  You should have strong drafting skills and be proactive with the ability to manage a number of transactions at the same time.

You should also be able to demonstrate experience of:

Drafting and negotiating project documentation

SOPC4, the 4Ps Waste Procurement Pack and recent consultation documents

Managing complex transactions within challenging timescales and budgets

Working with some aspect of climate change, waste or water policy and regulation

Business development

Their ideal candidates will be outgoing, team players who are enthusiastic, hardworking and eager to take on new challenges.
