This Head of Legal (Senior Lawyer) role is charged with building and leading a strong, high performing legal team that is closely engaged with the business unit and aligned to their objectives, focusing on value and risk
Head of Legal (Senior Lawyer) - British Gas Business - The Vacancy:
To lead a team of lawyers providing legal support to the business unit, drawing on other shared services within the team as necessary and working effectively with other key functions (eg compliance, regulatory) and experts in the wider team to deliver high quality, high impact, high value support to enable the business to meet its objectives.
To manage the budget for internal and external support and to manage the business unit support for the recharge, and to provide MI and reporting for the business unit and the legal team as a whole.
To partner with the shared services in the team to ensure high quality engagement and delivery for the business unit in the relevant areas.
To deliver support for all legal matters arising in the BGB business unit, which includes marketing, pricing and propositions, consumer and customer support, sales, and legal support for relevant regulatory and compliance issues, possibly M&A, and public sector and commercial tenders for services.
To approve transactions, processes and documentation up to the limits specified in the delegation of authority and to manage the process to obtain approvals from senior managers where required.
Ensure operational and regulatory risks are managed and escalated as appropriate.
Ensure information systems are operated to the required standard to maintain accurate and secure records.
Head of Legal (Senior Lawyer) - British Gas Business - The Person:
Legally qualified, with significant experience PQE and in house
Experience of legal leadership in a business environment - including interaction with senior managers
Confident, commercial, bold, creative, good communicator and able to relate to a wide range of people.
Experience of working in a highly regulated business
Experience of building strong relationships in challenging environments
Experience of delivering a legal function in a retail business including some element of compliance
Experience of leading a team in a challenging, fast paced environment

This is a key role within a highly visible Legal and Regulatory Team operating at the most senior level within British Gas, part of Centrica plc - the Top 30 FTSE 100 energy company.
The legal and regulatory team within British Gas is known for its exceptional engagement with the business units it supports. We are characterised by our strong focus on end customers of British Gas and a clear view of value and risk.
This role is to manage a shared services team delivering public sector tendering and commercial contracts support for B2B business across British Gas, managing a high volume of complex contracts using offshore support in short deadlines for several different business units.
To be a member of the British Gas Business executive management team (BEX) representing legal issues as well as regulatory matters, and engaging with the regulatory team to ensure that this support is delivered effectively.
