COMPETITION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LAWYER
The successful candidate will sit with the EU & Competition group and be able to make a major contribution to the technical excellence of that department and the raising of its profile, internally and externally. The successful candidate will assist the existing senior EU & Competition PDL, Catherine Hammon, in the core work of the departmental Professional Development team, as described below.
Main tasks
Standard Documents
* Produce new and update existing standard documents making sure they are in the firm's house style and use the relevant boiler plate.
* Produce guidance notes/checklists for use by fee earners in connection with standard documents.
* Periodically review the company's standard documents against similar documents negotiated in the context of client matters.
* Liaise with professional development lawyers (both in London and the firm's other offices) to ensure coherency of approach and that any EC or UK competition elements in their respective documents are up-to-date.
Information
* Produce and update practice briefing notes (notes explaining the firm's practice in a particular area of law) for internal use as appropriate.
* Ensure that fee earners are kept up-to-date with changes in the law and other relevant information, in particular, market information and know-how in relation to competition law matters by contributing to update sessions and keeping the appropriate area of the professional development intranet up-to-date.
* Liaise with other professional development lawyers across the firm to ensure appropriate flow of information between offices/departments.
* Develop and maintain the EU & Competition information room including collation of materials from external sources and fee earners and ensuring appropriate material is drawn to the fee earners attention.
In-House Counsel Role
* Available to advise junior fee earners on matters of law and practice in the competition area.
* Available to contribute experience and judgment to issues being dealt with by partners and senior members of the team.
Essential skills
Sufficient experience in competition law practice to have acquired technical expertise combined with commercial understanding. Prior experience in a know-how role is not essential.
Candidates must have a high level of relevant skills and competition law expertise gained at a major City or US firm.
Personal qualities are equally important - in particular commitment to the role, self-motivation, the ability to drive projects forward to completion and enthusiasm.
