THE ORGANISATION
We are instructed exclusively by a major academic institution based in London to recruit an in house commercial lawyer.
THE ROLE
The post holder will be a key player in the legal team providing and developing a high quality, professional legal service to the university and its enterprise subsidiary.
Reporting into the Governance, Information & Legal team, the post-holder will be a member of a small, yet effective, legal team providing in-house legal advice and support to the university, its board of governors, committees, vice chancellor/executive and its enterprise subsidiary.
A principal objective of the position is to create a highly professional and commercially astute legal platform by which enterprise can flourish within the university.
As this will be the first time that an in-house legal resource will be dedicated to this area, whoever is appointed will be expected to be proactive and take responsibility for shaping the role for the future.
Main activities and responsibilities:
Work closely with the Enterprise Director and Head of Research Support to define
the key areas of legal risk in the enterprise and research areas;
Adopt the "business partner" model with members of the enterprise team to enhance
awareness of legal matters across key areas of the university's enterprise and
research activities;
Review the suite of legal documents used by the university and its enterprise
subsidiary to ensure fitness for purpose;
Review non-standard terms and conditions proposed by counterparties in enterprise
and research contracts;
Develop a suite of legal documents to be used within the student entrepreneurship
initiative;
Negotiate and close complex legal transactions within external enterprise and
research clients;
Advise and assist with the preparation of intellectual property commercialisation
documentation to external lawyers or patent attorneys;
Form collaborative working relationships with a wide range of other departments and
functions across the university;
Keep up-to-date on relevant areas of law and best professional practice; disseminate
information to senior managers to enable legal compliance, including presenting
briefings and delivering training.
ABOUT YOU
Qualified to practise as solicitor or barrister in England & Wales; ideally with c 3pqe
in commercial / contract law, you will have the ability to interpret, draft and negotiate complex contract documentation;
You will also be able to:
Advise on new areas of law or changes to the law and to make consequential changes to precedents / suites of legal documents;
Communicate and present legal and commercial matters clearly to lay-people;
Deliver work of a consistently high quality, often to tight deadlines;
Your qualities will also include good interpersonal skills, and being a natural team-player with a demonstrable record of forming flexible, collaborative professional relationships.
The legal team is looking for a candidate who is available at relatively short notice and interested in an initial one year interim placement which may become permanent thereafter, although this is not guaranteed.
