- Monitoring developments of law and practice. Collecting precedents and other know-how from the group. Reviewing the material emanating from the regulators and reviewing key developments in law. ("Reviewing" in this context means acquiring a complete working knowledge of the relevant development, and then analysing those issues that have or may have an impact on the practice). This will be particularly important in the context of the new Companies Bill.
- Disseminating information/knowledge to the practice in an effective, interesting and pro-active way.
- Supporting the maintenance of the specialist library and legal know how materials. Maintaining reference files for the use of the group to ensure that everyone has access to key documents. Having responsibility for practice area specific information on Libra. ("Libra" is the Herbert Smith legal information database).
- Drafting model forms for the group. All model forms need to be kept up-to-date to reflect changes in law/practice. Working with partners to achieve excellence in documentation.
- Implementing proposals in connection with legal risk management, working with the Risk Management Partner for the practice area.
- Dealing with fee earner enquiries. Answering queries relating to the information maintained and new and complex areas of the law these could be from anyone in the practice area or the wider firm.
- Guiding on complex technical client problems and building a reputation for expertise and good judgement in advising on a range of specialist issues.
- Providing training on developments in the law and practice, and basic introductions to the law/practice for the team including inductions for new group members. Assisting in preparation of the course materials both for attendees and for the presenters of "in-house" education. The Professional Development team provides support in this role.
- Assisting business development initiatives (including preparing e-bulletins/client briefings etc.) Writing client briefings relating to developments in the law and practice in the area and sending newsflashes to clients by e-mail as appropriate. Assisting in setting up client seminars. Liasing with the design team, business development and web-site coordinator to ensure good use of all materials produced.
- Contributing to know-how produced for the external market such as articles and chapters for books that help to build a strong market profile for the practice area.
- Providing critical analysis and insights into new legal developments that show the practice area's leading-edge technical capability to clients and the market.
- Anticipating new legal and practice developments and the technical issues associated with them, and assisting the practice to prepare itself and its clients for the new developments.
- Identifying actual and potential technical innovations in the delivery of the practice area's services, assisting the practice area to develop and market new interpretations of the law, new solutions and new opportunities for clients.
- Providing support to practice areas other than their own in responding to the implications of new legal and practical developments, whether by way of documentation or training.
- Supporting the management or development of the firm's overall know-how resources.

The firm would not consider anyone for a PSL position with a lesser level of education than a candidate taken as a fee earner.
