The Birmingham employment team forms part of the leading national Employment and People Services Team at Gateley Plc. Highly ranked in both Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners, the Birmingham team acts for a wide range of clients in numerous sectors including retail, financial services, manufacturing, leisure and others. Examples of our clients include AGA Rangemaster Group, Arts Council England, BNP Paribas, Cox Automotive, Dune Group, Leadec, SEMTA, Sevacare and Tyrrells Crisps. By way of an example of the high quality work undertaken by the team, we are currently acting on one of the most high profile pieces of employment litigation of 2017 – a multi-claimant and multi-respondent claim involving national minimum wage compliance in the social care sector, which has received extensive national media coverage. The claim also involves complex issues concerning the application of the TUPE regulations.

The team is experienced and driven and comprises two Partners and two Assistants. The Partners consider that the recruitment of a candidate with the requisite PQE will form a valuable mid-level support to both the Partners (in respect of client development and business development) and the Assistants in respect of guidance and support. The successful candidate will be joining a hardworking and supportive team and will have partner support on tap. The team has a clear desire to nurture and develop the candidate throughout their career. The candidate will be given responsibility from the outset, being exposed to high quality work and working alongside the Partners on a number of high profile cases and projects. They will be involved in the development of client relationships from an early stage and have supervisory responsibilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
This role will involve a mixture of non-contentious and contentious employment work and the successful candidate will be expected to want to excel in both areas. The candidate will have a wide and varied work load to include (amongst others) some or all of the following areas:
* Drafting employment contracts and policies;
* Day to day advice to clients on their employee relations issue including by telephone and email, as well as drafting and checking of related letters;
* Project work relating to restructuring and TUPE;
* Corporate support work regarding M&A and outsourcing;
* Enforcement of restrictive covenants and confidentiality clauses;
* Employment Tribunal case handling and advocacy;
* Negotiating and drafting of settlement agreements;
* Delivery of training and development of new business opportunities.
Key Skills & Experience
We are looking to recruit a Solicitor or Associate from 3 to 6 years post qualification experience with high quality employment experience gained in a leading national or regional practice, with strong technical skills and the ability to manage a large and varied caseload with appropriate supervision. Experience in supervising colleagues (formally or through informal guidance) is valued. The successful candidate will possess a genuine desire and proven ability to develop relationships with clients, a strong commercial mindset, and a passion for delivering excellence in everything they do.
