Job summary

We are a national law firm offering a unique collection of specialisms across the commercial, public, health and insurance sectors, with offices in Birmingham, Exeter, London, Manchester and Nottingham. We have long-standing relationships with an impressive range of public and private sector clients and aim to truly understand their needs to deliver an exceptional service which exceeds their expectations and makes their life easier.

The role

Our team is looking for someone of between 4 and 8 years PQE (although we will consider applicants from more junior candidates for an assistant solicitor role) to work across all disciplines within our team but with a particular focus on procurement and project work. The role will be based in our Manchester office, a small but rapidly growing part of the firm, working predominantly with a Manchester-based partner but also with team members across all of our offices.

The vast majority of our work is non-contentious commercial advice for public sector clients but we also have a strong practice advising private sector organisations that have relationships with the public sector. Our advice includes:

* all aspects of EU procurement law, including challenges for both claimant and defendant;

* major projects, particularly urban regeneration;

* commercial agreements relating to collaborations, joint ventures and outsourcing;

* alternative service delivery models, including wholly- and jointly-owned companies, mutualisation and shared services;

* state aid;

* vires and governance.

We are seeking to enhance the government and infrastructure team through the recruitment of an experienced solicitor capable of managing their workload and developing their practice area. The right candidate for this role will be an experienced procurement and/or commercial contracts lawyer with a desire to drive growth in our Manchester office and develop junior lawyers. The ideal candidate will be an individual who has experience of either working for or very closely with public sector bodies.

Responsibilities

* managing own case load or supporting partners with the most complex matters

* delegating work to and supervising junior fee earners

* developing and taking part in marketing activities

* role model good file and financial management

* developing relationships within and outside the firm, starting to become a key contact for clients

* meeting hard and soft targets

Technical skills

* in-depth knowledge of the public procurement regime and how to it

* experienced in managing large projects for clients, including with advisors from different disciplines

* highly experienced in advising on a wide range of commercial matters for public sector clients

* an understanding of the statutory regime related to local authorities and other public bodies

* excellent drafting skills for a wide range of complex commercial documents

* able to present detailed and complex advice to clients

Compliance

* be familiar and compliant with the full range of regulatory policies and procedures including: equal opportunity and diversity, data protection and confidentiality/security, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering etc.

* undertake mandatory compliance training as required

Person specification

* work to a high standard and often to very tight timescales

* dynamic, willing to get involved in business development and marketing initiatives

* an effective communicator and negotiator able to establish and maintain harmonious and professional relationships with clients and colleagues

* attentive to detail

* willing to spend time if required in the firm’s other offices, or on short-term secondments with clients

* awareness of the political climate that may impact on advice to our clients
