The Planning team prides itself on providing commercially sound and clear planning advice to developers, landowners, house builders and retailers. The team is involved in a wide ranging nature of schemes and represents clients at inquiries, judicial reviews and appeals. We have a very strong client list. Our clients include a variety of commercial developers, house builders, local authorities and corporates including U&I, IM Properties, Helical Bar, Schroders, Goodman Logistics, The Dolphin Square Foundation, Miller Group, Grainger Plc, Persimmon Homes, Sanctuary Housing Association, Taylor Wimpey Homes, Transport for London and Wilson Bowden.

Highlights of the team's recent work include:

*

Advising St Modwen Properties Plc on the regeneration of Longbridge, including proposals for a major new food store;

*

Acting for the Crown Estate on the redevelopment of Regent Street;

*

Advising Rugby Borough Council on a proposed scheme for the delivery of 6,000 new homes;

*

Advising the GLA on the compulsory purchase order at Southall Gas Works to enable the provision of 3,500 homes;

*

Acting for The London Legacy Development Corporation in respect of the legacy use of the Olympic Stadium;

*

Acting for Salhia on the redevelopment of the Beorma Quarter, Birmingham;

*

Acting for Goodman on the strategic rail freight schemes at Heathrow and South Derbyshire involving up to five million square feet of floorspace and substantial rail infrastructure;

*

Acting on the redevelopment of Brent Cross

*

Acting for Slough Borough Council on the development of one million square feet of offices at Slough Trading Centre;

*

Acting for Copeland Borough Council in connection with proposals for nuclear new build at Sellafield and on the proposed national geological disposal facility;

*

Advising on the development of Edgbaston Cricket Ground to increase the capacity of the stadium to accommodate test match cricket.

Team members are based in both Birmingham and London and work closely with colleagues in the Real Estate Group on a broad spectrum of work including town and country planning, compulsory purchase, infrastructure and land compensation matters.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for an associate to join the team to advise on and conduct a broad range of planning related issues, including town and country planning, highways/infrastructure, environment, compulsory purchase and land compensation matters, arising out of large and complex schemes across a diverse range of sectors.

The role will have a broad planning focus and will involve:

*

planning law and its implications;

*

compulsory purchase and land compensation;

*

development consent orders;

*

judicial review;

*

listed buildings and conservation areas;

*

planning agreements and unilateral undertakings;

*

planning appeals;

*

planning applications;

*

planning enforcement;

*

planning due diligence; and

*

highways agreements

including taking instructions, drafting documents, negotiation, research, analysis, liaison with clients and third parties, meetings, communications, project management, administration and financial aspects, and post completion formalities as well as understanding and delivering on clients' requirements and expectations (including all reporting requirements);

*

marketing, group practice development and client entertainment/training events and activities;

*

assisting Partners and Associates with larger more complicated matters;

*

any other reasonable duties delegated by any Partner, Senior Manager of the firm or Practice Operations Manager.

Key skills and experience

Working in an inclusive, sharing and collaborative culture, you will be expected to play your part in ensuring the continuing success and growth of the team.

You should be able to:

*

Manage your own caseload to tight deadlines, remain calm under pressure and prioritise your workload effectively;

*

Work in a team environment (which may involve working as part of a bigger project team) and support your colleagues;

*

Give clear, practical advice with sound commercial judgment and swift accurate implementation of instructions;

*

Negotiate effectively and deliver commercial solutions for our clients;

*

Communicate appropriately at all levels within the team and the wider business as well as with clients, agents and other parties as well as attend inquiries, judicial reviews and appeals;

*

Work closely and collaboratively with Gowling WLG team members, clients, and other professionals (e.g. local authorities, agents, surveyors, consultants, accountants and others);

*

Draft planning related deeds and documents including those referred to in the Main duties and responsibilities section;

*

Understand planning related deeds and documents and preferably have experience of drafting and dealing with planning agreements, infrastructure agreements, planning applications, hearings and appeals, compulsory purchase issues and planning due diligence;

*

Prepare for and participate in marketing functions as part of added value services to our clients;

*

Assist and contribute to the preparation and delivery of presentations (seminars, beauty parades, marketing functions, and training sessions) as part of our added value services to our clients and within the team.

*

Ideally a minimum of 3 PQE.

You should have:

*

An effective, engaging and professional communication style with advanced interpersonal skills;

*

A proactive approach with the confidence to use your own initiative;

*

Effective time management and organisation skills;

*

Problem solving and analytical skills;

* Project management skills;

*

Strong IT/keyboard skills;

*

Presentation skills.
