About the Team

Housing Development and Regeneration team, one of the top teams in the country, sits within the Real Estate Group, which is one the UK's leading Real Estate practices, and the twelfth largest in the world.

The HDR team comprises 7 partners and 34 lawyers, supported by additional paralegals, advising on a very wide range of work, with a focus principally on development and regeneration. This includes all aspects of complex regeneration, and a number of associated areas such as mixed use, residential development and transport-led projects. Our regeneration client base is made up of a mix of local authorities and other public bodies, developers, registered providers and a variety of investors. In the wider team we act for house builders, mixed use developers, affordable housing providers, landowners (public and private) and investors in the residential and private rented sector. The team also plays a key part in the activities of the firm's wider public sector team, and is one of the central resources for real estate work won through the Central Government (CCS) panel. Members of our team play leading roles in the cross-firm public sector, procurement and rail teams.

Expertise:

The team’s areas of expertise include:

* development agreements

* advice on project structuring and operation of procurement processes;

* acquisitions, disposals and exchanges of land and property;

* leases of residential, commercial and mixed use premises;

* overage arrangements, and security;

* funding and grant agreements;

* collaboration, consortium and joint venture arrangements;

* planning and infrastructure agreements;

* rail and other transport-related developments;

* private rented sector;

* institutional investment in the residential sector;

We have a separate team of paralegals dealing with plot sales and part exchange transactions. However, this role does not include any element of domestic conveyancing,

Clients include: London Boroughs of Barnet, Croydon, Ealing and Greenwich, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Greater London Authority, Transport for London, London Underground, London Legacy Development Corporation, Ministry of Defence, Be First Regeneration, Wates, Be, Lewes District Council.

Main purpose of the role:

The principle role will be to work on a variety of regeneration and development projects for our regeneration client base. This will involve an element of routine property based work such as title, site assembly and leasing, but will more importantly involve developing the skills and experience to work on varied, complex and largely bespoke agreements such as development agreements, financing arrangements including grant agreements, and joint venture arrangements. As much of the work involves acting for, or across the table from public sector bodies, the role will also involve developing a working knowledge of issues such as public procurement and governance, and involvement in the management of processes such as competitive dialogue.

The role may also involve some support on site acquisition and development work for our market leading housebuilder client practice.

We see the role as a stepping stone for the successful applicant to developing the specialist expertise and overall sector knowledge and contacts to enable them in due course to take a leading role on complex and multi-faceted regeneration projects.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Predominantly the role will involve advising sophisticated clients (in tandem with partners and senior members of the team, depending on the level of experience of the successful candidate) on:

The speed of this exposure to complexity will vary depending on the candidate's current experience and aptitude.

It is important that the candidate actively engages in practice development activity, including networking, training and tender submissions, and is keen to establish a personal profile in the national regeneration world.

The role will also include any other reasonable duties delegated by any Partner, Senior Manager of the firm or Practice Operations Manager.
