CV Safe

Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment has written a comprehensive guide to help job seekers stay safe when searching for a new job. With identity theft rife in the UK and candidates perhaps not realising how sensitive a document their CV can be, Aaron Wallis have written a no-nonsense guide detailing precautions to take to help protect you against identity crime.

As Rob Scott, Managing Director explained, “most people regularly shred their bank statements and utility bills yet happily send their CV containing their full name, address, date of birth, career and educational history to complete strangers.

This information is just one or two pieces of data away from opening a bank account in their name. With a few searches of social networking sites this additional missing information can be found in minutes”.

The guide goes on to detail recruitment scams and the dangers of social networking when looking for a new job.

Legal Blogs that Stand Out from the Crowd

It seems as if the world and his wife now blog. There are something in the region of 50 Million blogs out in cyberspace. Here at Simply Law Jobs we thought we should take you on a quick tour around the various legal blogs that we enjoy reading;

- Baby Barista – Baby Barista is Tim Kevan’s funny and cutting blog. Supposedly it’s “fiction”. This device allows him to get much closer to the bone than he could if it was written as fact. It gives the author free reign and removes the fear of a lifetimes worth of libel cases! The blog has extended itself to a novel based around the year of a legal trainee. The book, ‘Baby Barista and the Art of War’ is Bridget Jones diary rewritten by a machiavellian law graduate. The blog itself has been snapped up by the Times and is now hosted in their legal section online.

- Charon QC – Charon QC is the blog of a qualified but non- practising lawyer and ex law tutor. It has a wealth of resources for all budding legal eagles. Brilliantly written, it is by turn’s witty, insightful, intelligent and irreverent. There’s also a series of great podcasts. A definite blog visit if you are looking for insights or resources to help you through those complex mazes of case law.
Podcasts

- The Magistrate’s Blog This is a great blog from the other side of the bench. It is the musings of the West London Magistrate. For your time to visit you get the low down on changes in law, exposure of legal loopholes and an insight into the daily life of a magistrate’s court. This as an example of the type of funny posts you get – “Another Odd ‘Un I spoke the other day to a colleague from another court who had just dealt with a case of careless driving and failing to stop and report an accident. The two vehicles involved were a diesel baggage tug and a Boeing 747-400…”

- Geek Lawyer Another Barrister’s blog – must be something about their way with words. This one is focussed around intellectual property law, the legal system and civil liberties. We like the way in which he brings in aspects of wider popular culture and rounds the blog out and makes it a really entertaining read. There are great posts about The Big Chill and War of The Worlds that give you a taste of the blog and the content. Well worth keeping an eye on.

- Head of League – This great blog has recently moved from its odd blogger home to its own space The author Carl Gardner is a busy bloke. He is a barrister – yes another one! He also writes for a variety of other blogs, lectures on law and is driven to write about the law. As he explains:
“I write Head of Legal to explain developments in law, and the law behind the news, to an informed and interested but not necessarily legal audience. And because I can’t help thinking, writing and obsessing about law, particularly my specialisms in constitutional, public, human rights and European law and the way they interact with politics and society…”
If that sounds dry and too academic it really isn’t. It reads well and is really well informed. Head of League is a real authority blog.

Please let us know if we have missed any good legal blogs that you enjoy reading. We will add them to our blog & forum and give you a shout out in a future posts.

Law on tour to focus on Equality Bill

The Law on Tour workshops from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) are a ‘one stop shop’ for the latest on employment law. This autumn’s workshops offer a thorough employment law refresher, look at important case law decisions and preview new legislation.

This tour starts on 6 October and will focus particular attention on the Equality Bill to help participants increase their knowledge on:

· protected characteristics

· multiple discrimination

· changes to direct and indirect discrimination

· equal pay

· positive action

· harassment

· disability – the medical model and beyond.

Mike Emmott, Employee Relations Adviser at CIPD says: “The sharp increase in employment tribunals following the swathe of redundancies in the recession should send a clear warning to employers that they simply cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to the law. It’s vital that HR professionals are up to speed with legal developments to guide and protect employers – they need to be confident that their practices at work are sound and reflect the latest changes.

“The CIPD Law on Tour workshops are designed to help HR professionals understand the legal complexities of perennial employment issues and to prepare them for changes to come. The Equality Bill alone is a major change that will force employers to review their existing equality strategies.”

Other areas to be covered include a whole raft of employment law also due this year, such as:
